Welcome to the International Registry of Certified Medical Interpreters

For the development of professional medical interpreters

This registry is the first-ever online registry of certified medical interpreters. And it is free for you to use. It enables you, as an interpreter, to efficiently identify your professional status.

It also helps you, as a medical provider, to identify the professional level of healthcare interpreters approved through recognized Certification Programs. As a medical provider, the interpreter background information you find here can provide a sense of reassurance that these interpreters are acknowledged by the respective certification organizations as meeting the highest available professional standards to aid in your organization’s quality assurance initiatives.

Why Use a Registry?

This Registry permits:
  • Interpreters to include this information on their CV and profile
  • Providers to efficiently validate an interpreter’s level of profession, and
  • Demonstrate compliance and quality practices by incorporating the use of this registry into its quality assurance reporting

Only a fraction of encounters between providers and LEP patients…

…takes place with the use of professional interpreters. Unfortunately, many encounters involve untrained individuals that are assumed to be capable of performing the role of an interpreter merely because they are bilingual.

There are many complexities involved with interpreting and none more so than in healthcare where a person’s well-being and possibly their very life is at stake.

Often bilingual staff, friends, family and even children are used to act as communicator within clinical situations. Research has proven that professional interpreters can improve outcomes for patients and even reduce costs.

Thus the reason for a Registry of certified medical interpreters such as this.

How the Registry works

Users can access the Registry at no charge and without membership. The Registry has searchable functions by the following categories:
  • Interpreter Name
  • Certification Number
  • State of Residence
  • Certification
  • Language
  • Type of interpreting (telephone, on-site or video)

Registry Establishment

The Registry was initiated and funded through a grant from Language Line Services and with support from many of its clients and partners in the healthcare industry.

This initiative was developed as a way for Language Line Services to give back to the healthcare community it serves. The Registry is also a way to provide information about the men and woman who have achieved professional designations within the industry.
